10 Desks that helped to Shape Our World.....

When President Barack Obama took the oath of office nearly a year ago, he inherited more than a war, a bad economy and runaway unemployment. He also inherited the Oval Office and the Resolute desk, by far one of the most famous desks in the world. It was built from timber that was originally used in the British ship, Resolute. The desk was presented by Queen Victoria as a gift to President Rutherford B. Hayes.

The desk is now a fixture in the Oval Office of and has been used by almost every US president since Hayes. The exceptions are Presidents Lyndon Johnson, Nixon and Ford. Of the presidents who did use the Resolute desk, however, some chose to use it in their private studies rather than the more formal and historic Oval Office.

The desk was modified to accommodate President Franklin Roosevelt, who had it placed atop a two inch base to accommodate his wheelchair. Because he preferred that people not see his leg braces while tending to the business of running the nation, FDR had also requested that the kneehole be fitted with a modesty panel bearing the presidential seal. However, he passed away before it was actually installed.

Rumor has it that the desk members of the Dorset Regiment removed the desk used by Adolf Hitler during World War II from his headquarters and donated it to the regimental museum at the Keep in Dorchester, England. It is seen here as it appears in the museum, adorned with the Nazi flag, other Nazi memorabilia and a framed photo of the dictator, himself.

4. Einstein’s Desk

Life Magazine published these photos of the Princeton office used by Albert Einstein just a few months before his death in 1955. The paper strewn desk, the unkempt bookcases, the chalkboard displaying of equations, and even the pipe carelessly tossed on top of an notebook, capture the essence of the man who has become known as the world most renowned genius.

5. Steve Wozniak/Steve Jobs Desk

The office of the brains behind the Apple computer empire looks more like a garage, a warehouse, or perhaps even a refuse center. The King of the Nerds’ workspace is cluttered, and to the unenlightened eye, disorganized. However, in this case, a cluttered desk truly means a busy mind. Steve Wozniak reigns supreme in what most people would consider to be the messiest office on the planet… or is it his partner… the other computer geek named Steve – none other than Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs?

6. Shakespeare’s Desk

Although he never claimed authorship of the many plays now attributed to him during his lifetime, there is very little doubt that William Shakespeare actually wrote most of them at this very desk located in his home in Stratford upon-Avon.

7. Warren  Buffets Desk

You would be surprised to discover how ordinary billionaire Warren Buffet’s Omaha, Nebraska, office is. His office has no computer, no stock terminal or any of the other accessories one might expect to see in the office of a person as powerful as this. He doesn’t even have a calculator in his office. He keeps the television in his office tuned to financial news network, CNBC, but the volume is muted.   While he sometimes takes a mobile phone with him when he travels, Buffet refuses to use one while in his home town. Instead, he uses two black telephones that sit unobtrusively on the cabinet behind his desk – both of which are direct lines to his Wall Street stock brokers in New York.

8. Gandhi Desk

The father of peaceful confrontation, Mahatma Gandhi had no computer or any of the other items now considered to be essential for an office or desk. In fact, he liked to sit on the floor. To accommodate this preference, he had a very low desk. Gandhi perched himself at his low slung desk to write letters to world leaders urging them to seek peaceful resolution to conflicts, including the famous letters to Adolf Hitler.

9. Charles Dickens Desk

When it was sold in auction last year, the desk used by Charles Dickens to write Great Expectations and all of his final correspondence just hours before his death brought in £433,250 ($894,000US).

The Irish entrepreneur who bought it said that the price was a bargain for a piece of literary history such as this.

10.  Winston Churchill’s Desk

Toward the end of World War II, British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill asked the Prime Minister of Australian to send him a live Platypus for his amusement and to lift his spirits. Sadly, however, the animal, which was given the name ‘Winston,’ died before completing the long journey from Australia to England. Not to be dissuaded, Churchill contacted a taxidermist who stuffed the animal and kept it on his desk for the rest of the war.

Do men prefer working wives?

With the dimension of family economics going through a sea change, a majority of men today prefer a working wife. Apart from contributing financially to a marriage, working women can relate to their husband in a better way as they also have to go through similar grilling at their workplace. A recent survey also claims that majority of men have no issues in sharing the title of breadwinner with their better half.

Amit Bajpai, sales and marketing manager says, "Especially in metros, where the standard of living is so high, a man would like to have a helping hand. Moreover, a working wife would understand thework pressure you are facing; you can talk to her about your work related problems. I think the working population has become more smart and sharp with the passage of time, as they have to deal with unique situations everyday."

Model Manpreet Brar also thinks that metrosexual men prefer a working partner. "Generally, the mindset of a working woman is completely different from a house wife and she shares a better understanding with her man. Double income is another advantage. Obviously, with more earnings, you can have a better quality of life. In a situation where a guy decides to set up his own business or plans to study further post marriage, having an earning partner is a great help as she can take over the role of the primary earner in the family," Manpreet added.

Changing economic realities have changed the attitude of masses. Men are no longer bothered with the fact that their partner has a heftier pay packet than their own.

Television actor Manish Goel says, "I really respect those women who are primary earners in their families and their husbands should be proud of them. Family is a vehicle with two wheels, one on both sides and its great if a couple can strike a balance. My wife is working for past 15 years. In our industry, we have hectic schedules and strange timings. As Poonam and I are in the same profession she understands the situation completely and does not crib about it. And the best part is that you get expensive gifts. Poonam always gives me something pricey on my birthday, which she knows I am planning to buy from long!"

Harsha Bhogle on Sachin Tendulkar

Harsha Bhogle on Sachin  Tendulkar

Remember when you failed an examination. How many people recall that, your class, friends, relatives? You failed to make it to the IITs or IIMs. Who remembers? How many times have you had the feeling of being the best in your class, school , university, state….., you failed to get a visa stamped this quarter…, you missed a promotion this year…, how did it feel when you dad told you in your early twenties that you are good for nothing…..and now your boss tell you the same...

You keep introspecting and go into a shell when people most of whom don’t matter a dime in your life criticize you, back bite you, make fun of you. You are left sad and shattered and you cry when your own kin scoffs at you. You say I am feeling low today. It takes a lot from us to come out of these everyday situations and move on. A lot??? really?

Now here’s a man standing on the third man boundary in the last over of a world cup match. The bowler just has to bowl sensibly to win this game. What the man at the boundary sees is 4 rank bad bowls bowled without any sense of focus, planning or regret. India loses, yet again in those circumstances when he has done just about everything right.

He does not cry. Does not show any emotion. Just keeps his head down and leaves the field. He has seen these failures for 22 years now. And not just his class, relatives, friends but the whole world has seen these failures. We are too immature to even imagine what goes on in that mind and heart of his.

That’s why I would never want to be Sachin.

True, he has single handedly lifted to moods of this entire nation umpteen number of times. He has been an inspiration to rise above our mediocrity. Nobody who has ever lifted the willow even comes close to this man’s genius. His dedication and metal strength is unparallel. This is especially for those people who would have made fun of him again last night when India lost. They are people who are mediocre in their own lives. Who just scoff at others to create cheap fun? Who have lived in a small hole throughout their lives and thought they have seen the oceans.

Think about the man himself. He is 37 years of age. He has been playing almost nonstop for 22 years. The way he was running and diving around the field last night would have put 22 year olds to shame. The way he played the best opening quickies in the world was breathtaking. He just keeps getting better which is by the way humanly impossible. It’s not for nothing that people call him GOD.

But still I don’t want to be in those shoes. We struggle in keeping our monotonous lives straight, lives which affect a limited number of people. Imagine what would be the magnitude of the inner struggle for him, pain both mental and physical, tears that have frozen with time, knees and ankles and every other joint in the body that is either bandaged or needs to be attended to every night, eyes that don’t sleep before a big game, bats that have scored 99 international tons and still see expectations from a billion people.

And he just converts those expectations into reality. We watch in awe, feel privileged.

Well I think it’s time that his team realizes that enough is enough. They have an obligation, not towards their country alone but towards Sachin. They need to win this one for him. Stay assured that he himself will still deliver and leave no stone unturned to make sure India wins this cup.

This is not just a game, and he is not just a sportsman. It’s much more than this. Words fail here.....

Japan prepares to restart work at nuclear plant

Fukushima:  Emergency workers forced to retreat from a tsunami-stricken Japanese nuclear power plant when radiation levels soared prepared to return Wednesday night after emissions dropped to safer levels.

The pullback cost precious time in the fight to prevent a nuclear meltdown, further escalating a crisis spawned by last week's devastating earthquake and tsunami that pulverized Japan's northeastern coast and likely killed more than 10,000 people.

It was unclear what happened in the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant's overheating reactors after late morning, when the workers stopped pumping in seawater trying to cool their fuel rods. Officials gave only sparse information about the reactors.

But conditions at the plant appeared to be worsening. White steam-like clouds drifted up from one reactor which, the government said, likely emitted the burst of radiation that led to the workers' withdrawal. The plant's operator reported a fire at another reactor for the second time in two days.

At one point, national broadcaster NHK showed military helicopters lifting off to survey radiation levels above the complex, preparing to dump water onto the most troubled reactors in a desperate effort to cool them down. The defense ministry later said those flights were a drill, and it had no plans to make an airborne water drop.

"The anxiety and anger being felt by people in Fukushima have reached a boiling point," the governor of Fukushima prefecture, Yuhei Sato, fumed in an interview with NHK. He criticized preparations for an evacuation if conditions worsen and said centers already housing people moved from nearby the plant do not have enough hot meals and basic necessities.

The nuclear crisis has triggered international alarm and partly overshadowed the human tragedy caused by Friday's 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the subsequent tsunami, a blast of black seawater that pulverized Japan's northeastern coastline. The quake was one of the strongest recorded in history.

Millions of people struggled for a fifth day with little food, water or heat, and already chilly temperatures turned to snow in many areas. Police say more than 452,000 people are staying in temporary shelters, often sleeping on the floor in school gymnasiums.

Nearly 3,700 people are officially listed as dead, but officials believe the toll will climb over 10,000 since several thousand more are listed as missing.

In an extremely rare address to the nation, Emperor Akihito expressed condolences and urged Japan not to give up.

"It is important that each of us shares the difficult days that lie ahead," said Akihito, 77, a figure deeply respected across the country. "I pray that we will all take care of each other and overcome this tragedy."

He also expressed his worries over the nuclear crisis, saying: "With the help of those involved I hope things will not get worse."

Since the quake and wave hit, authorities have been struggling to avert an environmental catastrophe at the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex, 140 miles (220 kilometers) north of Tokyo. The tsunami knocked out the backup diesel generators needed to keep nuclear fuel cool at the plant's six reactors, setting off the atomic crisis.

In the city of Fukushima, about 40 miles (60 kilometers) inland from the nuclear complex, hundreds of harried government workers, police officers and others struggled to stay on top of the situation in a makeshift command center.

An entire floor of one of the prefecture's office buildings had been taken over by people tracking evacuations, power needs, death tolls and food supplies.

In one room, uniformed soldiers evaluated radiation readings on maps posted across a wall. In another, senior officials were in meetings throughout the day, while nuclear power industry representatives held impromptu briefings before rows of media cameras.

Wednesday's radiation spike was believed to have come from Unit 3, where workers are struggling with a fuel storage pond believed to be leaking radiation, as well as possible damage to the containment vessel -- the thick concrete armor built around the reactor -- that would allow radiation to escape.

"The workers cannot carry out even minimal work at the plant now," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Wednesday morning at briefing aired on television, as smoke billowed above the complex. "Because of the radiation risk we are on standby."

With no workers on site, efforts to cool the reactors likely ceased altogether, said Michael Friedlander, a former nuclear power plant operator who worked at a General Electric boiling water reactor in the United States similar to the stricken ones in Japan.

"They're in right now is what's called a feed-and-bleed mode. In order to keep the core covered and keep the reactor cool they have to feed in water," said Friedlander, who is currently based in Hong Kong. "It's something that they physically have to be present to do."

Elevated levels of radiation were detected well outside the 20-mile (30-kilometer) emergency area around the plants. In Ibaraki prefecture, just south of Fukushima, officials said radiation levels were about 300 times normal levels by late morning. It would take three years of constant exposure to these higher levels to raise a person's risk of cancer.

A little radiation was also detected in Tokyo, triggering panic buying of food and water.

Given the reported radiation levels, John Price, an Australian-based nuclear safety expert, said he saw few health risks for the general public so far. He was concerned for the workers, who he said were almost certainly working in full body suits and breathing through respirators. The workers at the forefront of the fight -- a core team of about 180 -- had been regularly rotated in and out of the danger zone to minimize their radiation exposure.

Price said he was surprised by how little information the Japanese were sharing.

"We don't know even the fundamentals of what's happening, what's wrong, what isn't working. We're all guessing," he said. "I would have thought they would put on a panel of experts every two hours."

Edano said the government expects to ask the U.S. military for help, though he did not elaborate. He said the government is still considering whether to accept offers of help from other countries.

There are six reactors at the plant. Units 1, 2 and 3, which were operating last week, shut down automatically when the quake hit. Since then, all three have been rocked by explosions. Compounding the problems, on Tuesday a fire broke out in Unit 4's fuel storage pond, an area where used nuclear fuel is kept cool, causing radioactivity to be released into the atmosphere.

Units 4, 5 and 6 were shut at the time of the quake, but even offline reactors have nuclear fuel -- either inside the reactors or in storage ponds -- that need to be kept cool.

Meanwhile, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency estimated that 70 percent of the rods have been damaged at the No. 1 reactor.

Japan's national news agency, Kyodo, said that 33 percent of the fuel rods at the No. 2 reactor were damaged and that the cores of both reactors were believed to have partially melted.

Very Powerfully Worded. Bravo - Prakash Bajaj, Editor of Times of India

Must Read ! Very Powerfully Worded. Bravo - Prakash Bajaj, Editor of
Times of India .

LETTER OF THE EDITOR OF "THE TIMES OF INDIA " TO
THE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA

I am born and brought up in Mumbai for last fifty eight years. Believe me, corruption in Maharashtra is worse than that in Bihar . Look at all the politicians, Sharad Pawar, Chagan Bhujbal, Narayan Rane, Bal Thackray , Gopinath Munde, Raj Thackray, Vilasrao Deshmukh all are rolling in money. Vilasrao Deshmukh is one of the worst Chief ministers I have seen. His only business is to increase the FSI every other day, make money and send it to Delhi , so Congress can fight next election. Now the clown has found new way and will increase FSI for fishermen, so they can build concrete houses right on sea shore. Next time terrorists can comfortably live in those houses, enjoy the beauty of the sea and then attack our Mumbai at their will.

Recently, I had to purchase a house in Mumbai. I met about two dozen
builders. Everybody wanted about 30% in black. A common person like me knows this and with all your intelligent agency & CBI, you and your finance ministers are not aware of it. Where all the black money goes? To the underworld isn't it? Our politicians take help of these goondas to vacate people by force. I myself was victim of it. If you have time please come to me, I will tell you everything.

If this has been a land of fools, idiots, then I would not have ever
cared to write to you this letter. Just see the tragedy. On one side we are reaching moon, people are so intelligent; and on the other side, you politicians have converted nectar into deadly poison.I am everything Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Schedule caste, OBC, Muslim OBC, Christian Schedule caste, and Creamy Schedule caste; only what I am not is INDIAN. You politicians have raped every part of Mother India by your policy of divide and rule.

Take example of our Former President Abdul Kalam. Such an intelligent person; such a fine human being. But you politician didn't even spare him and instead choose a worthless lady who had corruption charges and insignificant local polititian of Jalgaon WHO'S NAME ENTIRE COUNTRY HAD NOT HEARD BEFORE. Its simple logic your party just wanted a rubber stamp in the name of president. Imagine SHE IS SUPREME COMMANDAR OF INDIA 'S THREE DEFENCE FORCES. what moral you will expect from our defence forces ? Your party along with opposition joined hands, because politicians feel
they are supreme and there is no place for good person.

Dear Mr Prime minister, you are one of the most intelligent persons, a most learned person. Just wake up, be a real SARDAR. First and
foremost, expose all selfish politicians. Ask Swiss banks to give
names of all Indian account holders. Give reins of CBI to independent agency. Let them find wolves among us. There will be political upheaval, but that will be better than dance of death which we are witnessing every day. Just give us ambience where we can work honestly and without fear. Let there be rule of law. Everything else will be taken care of.

Choice is yours Mr. Prime Minister. Do you want to be lead by one
person, or you want to lead the nation of 100 Crore people?
